I’ve just had the same as below in relation to gumtree
I've seen lots of scams like this before from Gumtree, this is the first on whatsapp though. 'Thomas' wanted to buy my item no questions asked for full price and I knew straight away it was a scam. Same photo of a police officer as the others. I decided to play along, see how far it would go. I've got the email from 'paypal' in broken English and am currently questioning the big red banner from Gmail saying 'Dangerous email, avoid' saying not to click or reply. He said 'oh yes, I get the same email in my inbox'. I'm going to play along for a bit, waste his time, then will be posting the entire conversation on linkedin and facebook to show others what to look out for. I've also had two emails from 'sara' and 'anna' of similar nature, so thats THREE scammers since I posted the ad last night... shocking
Replied to advert on Gumtree. Offered full price with minimal questions asked. I have googled the number and found reports of previous attempted scams.
Tried to get details of my address and asked for Paypal details to send money - not likely!!
I Was selling something on gumtree he sent me a WhatsApp asked for why I was selling the item and I asked him why he wanted to know, he then asked for my pay pal details he would transfer payment and when it clears get a mover/pick up person to get item, told him no chance and blocked his number. His picture was of a metropolitan police officer.
Offered to buy item on Gumtree without viewing or checking size. Wanted PayPal details for payment and would send shipping agent to collect item and deliver to his family - same photo of policeman which confirmed s/he wasn't genuine.
Made out he was interested in buying an item through Gumtree. Happy to pay full price by the looks of things and just wanted all my PayPal and email details.
used a photograph of a police officer in the met as his profile picture so will be reporting this to my local police with his telephone number as it is an offence to impersonate a police person.
I tried to sell some goods online. He has messaged me, not really interested about the item, but very quick to pay me. SCAMMERS! Sending you fake emails (saying is from paypal) asking you to buy a steam gift card for £200 then will appears the payment on your account.
Reckons he's sent money via PayPal - no questions about an item, happy to pay full price. No money arrives! Broken or translated English
Tried to scam me on my motorbike sale
